Why I Hate PC Culture: A Message from an Artist

I retweeted something on twitter today, I may get a lot of flack for it but I don't really care. I logged onto twitter to post some messages to help us get more exposure and saw something trending called Black Olives Matter. It made me chuckle because I'm one of those All Lives Matter people. We're proud supporters of Native Americans in film (Michael Lakota Dillon and Ashley Runyan are both Native Americans) however, when do you hear about Native Americans getting killed by police? It's happening more to them than anyone else.

Where's Native Lives Matter's media coverage? I'm a misanthropic bastard and I still believe that human lives are sacred. I don't care if you "see it as a racist statement", All Lives Matter, you ignoramuses!

Sorry stepping off my soap box for a bit. This is what I believe I'm going to get flack for:

Funny part? It was a tweet by a black woman. See some Italian restaurant made these Black Olives Matter shirts and now the internet is throwing a shit fit about it. That is what finally pissed me off. When I worked at that appraisal company they constantly fret over what was politically correct. They made me remove a picture of mountains because there were deer in the picture and they feared being thought of as hunters.

​I'm not kidding. This is what PC culture has done to us. We live in fear of what may offend somebody.

I'm a right wing Messianic Jew and not even I get offended as much as some of these liberal nut jobs. Probably because I fill my mind with so much counter media that I just can't be bothered to care anymore. Seriously, I listen to Darkest Hour pretty much every day and those dudes have a bunch of songs about how there is no God. Does that offend me? Hell no! I love their music and pray one day they can have a personal relationship with God.

I'm not an easily offended dude is pretty much what I'm saying. I've watched a movie where a dude raped a newborn baby, not for real of course, but I've seen it. As an artist, I believe people need to be offended. We need people like John Waters to offend us because that is what makes us tolerant.

PC Culture likes to preach a message of tolerance without really understanding what it means. Tolerance can only happen when we are forced to face conflicting views. There's an episode of South Park where they preach a message of tolerance and then go outside and yell at a guy for smoking a cigarette. I love that part because I feel like that's what PC Culture's tolerance is all about.

Alice Cooper once was doing an interview and he was talking about watching TV and some new rock artist who came out in his name brand clothing and was talking about not wanting to offend anyone. Alice Cooper wondered to himself, "what's the purpose in doing rock and roll if you're not offending anybody?"

That leads me to the biggest complaint with PC Culture. As long as we live in fear of offending people, we will never have great art. I'm not saying you have to offend people to make great art. I've seen some films that exist only to offend and they suck. I've listened to bands who only care about offending people and some are good (Sex Pistols) and some are bad (Butcher Babies).

My point is that you can't live in fear because then your art will never transcend time. Birth of a Nation pissed off everybody, yet we still talk about it today. Schindler's List is offensive in how the Jewish people were treated, yet it's a fantastic film. I remember Pink Flamingos, I don't remember Captain America: Civil War.

If you are an artist and are afraid of offending somebody. Stop worrying. People NEED to be offended. We can't live inside of bubbles or echo chambers. We need to go out and be offended and understand this is just how other people see the world. Not only will it help us see the world differently, it'll help us grow closer as people.

I'm a misanthrope and I'm encouraging people to grow closer? Yeah, just because I'm a misanthrope doesn't mean I don't have any faith the world can change for the better. I'm a misanthrope because it usually changes for the worse.
