Support _______ In Film

There is this trend going around about supporting women in film, supporting people of color in film, support blah blah in film. Yeah, fuck that noise. You have no right to tell me what kind of films to support. My favorite director is Akira Kurosawa, you think I give a fuck about someone's skin color? I like Kathryn Bigelow and Ana Lily Amirpour and think they both have made great films. Let's be honest though: not many women direct and those that do usually make movies more targeted towards women. I'm not looking for a love story, I just want to watch something interesting.

That's actually how I look at films. I'm not concerned about the color or sex or sexual orientation of a director, I'm looking at if they can make a good film. I don't think my films are good but I'm also extremely critical of myself. Do you know who else hates their films? John Waters. John Waters is a gay man but I don't feel he ever forced his lifestyle upon me. I enjoy his movies because they're funny and strange. I saw a movie a few months ago by a female director and halfway through the film the female characters sit down at a table (did I mention there is a killer on the loose? Yeah, because there totally is) and then bitch about the men in their lives. Yes, seriously.

Most people don't care about who the director is, unless you're someone like Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino, so supporting purple people eaters in film is a joke. I think it's just a dumb movement started by hacks to get their films seen. Why? Because I've used #SupportNativeAmericans in film on numerous occasions. Why? Because A Final Hit had two Native Americans in it.

The truth is if you're using #Support______inFilm, your film is most likely not very good. I know our films aren't that good but it's something I've come to embrace. I call our films B-movies because they're quickly made and made for very little money. However, they are made with a love for the craft. I know a lot of people who like B-movies that absolutely love our films and there's people who expect every film to be Hollywood level who think everything we make is garbage.

My point is stop using #Support________inFilm because it seems more like you're whining about being oppressed than you're actually out there making films just to make films. It comes across like you're a money grubbing pig than a filmmaker. I make crappy B-movies and all I care is that someone, somewhere sees our films. Lately, people have been and those who enjoy crappy B-movies enjoy our films. You're not being oppressed, there are just a lot of people screaming out there and their voices are most likely louder than yours. Your film will find an audience, it will just take time.
