Just keeping with those horror-comedies, aren't you, RJ?
Look, I don't talk about many recent films on Demise of Film, at least not anymore. Yeah, ten years ago, I talked a lot about modern films but now I talk mostly about older films. It's because those older films were crafted with passion for filmmaking alongside making money. Renfield feels like it has a bit of that passion I've been longing for.
It's not perfect by any means. Awkwafina really gets on my nerves. Her schtick seems to be saying swear words really loudly and that's why people think she's funny? She just didn't work for me. Sonic the Hedgehog (Ben Schwartz) was okay. I do wish he was the villain instead of being this mama's boy. The mom doesn't really do anything and I felt like his character was neutered by not making him the big bad.
We all know why I'm talking about this movie though. Nic Mother Fuckin' Cage. Is he good in this movie? Yes. Is he obviously having a blast with the material? Yes. Does Nicholas Hoult play well with him? YES! Nick and Nic easily made this movie. You could cut all the other stuff and I would still love the movie.
I absolutely adored the recreations of scenes from Dracula (1931). The effects in the movie were also fun. They used a mixture of practical and CG, which is okay by me.
Look don't go into this expecting some masterpiece of cinema. As I said, the stuff with Awkwafina is rather weak and I wish Ben Schwartz was the big bad. But Hoult and Cage play well together and they're both obviously having fun making this. It's fun and sometimes that's all a movie needs to be.
