I just noticed that Tobe Hooper has shown up quiet a bit on this year's Spooptober list. Okay, I mentioned Tales from the Crypt a few days ago. Are you guys fans of Tales from the Crypt? Did you guys like Creepshow last year?
Body Bags is another compilation film in the style of Creepshow and Tales from the Crypt. John Carpenter plays the Mortician and bookends each of the stories. The best stories in this film are definitely The Gas Station and The Eye.
The Gas Station tells the story of a serial killer stalking around the town of Haddonfield. Wait, haven't I see this movie? A young woman is working at a gas station late at night and there are strange happenings this particular evening. This one has a lot of that classic Carpenter flair. It also has George "Buck" Flowers as a bum!
Hair is definitely more along the lines of 90s Carpenter complete with bad CG. I do like the makeup effects on Keach though. It's about a balding man who doesn't want to be bald. I do like the twist, but the aforementioned CG just made this one less enjoyable for me.
The Eye features Mark Hamill losing an eye in a car accident. He gets an eye transplant but begins seeing mutilated bodies around the house, which slowly causes a descent into madness. This one was directed by Tobe Hooper and some scenes definitely feel reminiscent of scenes in Poltergeist.
I had put off Body Bags for a long time simply because it's 90s Carpenter and 90s Carpenter is a lot more miss than hit. Granted, it's not as good as Creepshow, which showcased five spooky stories and was bookended by a cool cartoon and Tom Atkins being an asshole (aka Best Tom Atkins), but it's certainly a lot better than Creepshow 2.
