This might be the hardest film to watch. Why? Because there are like three? I'm pretty sure it's three. There are three cuts of this movie. There's Creepers, which is a shorter American cut from the 80s. There's an Anchor Bay version with a longer cut of the movie but there are still things missing. Then there's the international cut.
Phenomena is a movie that took me forever to see because of the aforementioned multiple cuts. Finding the international cut had been such a chore until 2016. Once I managed to see it, I fell in love with it. Not just because it's basically a movie version of one of my favorite Super Famicom games either.
A lot of people say Suspiria is Argento's best film but I love the surrealism and the insane plot twists that Phenomena features. There are mutant children and crazed killer apes. All this set to Iron Maiden and Motorhead. Phenomena is fucking bat shit insane and I love it.
This movie also features some great kills and creepy atmosphere. The opening five minutes alone make this film worth it. The girl being left behind by the bus. The abandoned house with some sort of chained up creature inside. Her running away from a maniac only to be decapitated. There is an intense dreamlike quality to this movie, one of the best post-Suspiria films to capture this essence.
If you like Argento, you like Suspiria, and you like Clock Tower, you cannot go wrong with Phenomena. Now crank that Iron Maiden!
