If you have not been around since the 2012 days of Demise of Film, I talked about a series of movies called 6 Films To Keep You Awake. It's a short feature film collection showcasing movies from Spain. If you have been a reader since 2012, you may remember that one of my favorites was Cuento de Navidad. I enjoyed that one because it captured the look and feel of an 80s movie way better than anything made within the last twenty years.
Due to my enjoyment of that film, I wondered what else Paco Plaza made. My friend Marco sent me a short film called Abuelos, which was weird and honestly, I'm still confused how I feel about it. I also discovered a found footage movie called REC. As I said back on day 19, I do not like found footage movies. I find them to be lazy and try too hard to be scary by loading the film with jump scares. I also find the cinematography to be extremely lacking.
REC is not any of those things. REC makes it very clear what is happening. The film builds tension masterfully. Heck, my biggest issue with REC is not even a REC problem. My biggest complaint with REC was that I knew how it would end because of a trailer for a stupid American movie called Quarantine. Other than that I think REC is fantastic and suspenseful. Definitely check it out.
