I wanted to cover this movie as part of Spooptober, but in case you don't remember, Spooptober was meant to showcase horror movies I like not...movies I feel indifferent towards.
I was super excited for this movie. It's got Nic Cage and Sion Sono, it's basically a match made in Crazyland, right? Heck, it even is very reminiscent of Escape from LA. Fuck it, this is Escape from LA now.
I was strapped in and really enjoying this movie...but then Sofia Boutella shows up and out comes my cellphone.
The way I am with my cell phone and movies is I try very hard to focus on a movie and ignore my phone. However, I know if I'm on my phone that I'm not enjoying the movie. I don't know why Sofia Boutella is being given bigger roles in movies. She was fine in Kingsman (even though I thought the film itself was ass) but she also wasn't forced to carry the movie.
I don't hate Sofia, I just don't think she's a strong actress. There is so much to enjoy about Prisoners of the Ghostland that I really hate the fact that I didn't enjoy it. The ridiculous suit that Nic Cage wears had so much potential. Bill "Choptop" Mosely is being his crazy self. The dude from Versus is in this movie being Toshiro Mifune.
The problem is the movie just kinda feels like it comes to a screeching halt once Choptop's daughter enters the fray. I really wanted to love this movie because it does so many things weird and wild. The film looks great, Nic Cage and Bill Mosely are both fantastic, I just wish the movie didn't hit the brakes.
I will definitely revisit this movie, just keeping in mind to keep my cell phone away from me. I really want to love it, but it's missing something to put me over the edge.
