In the Mouth of Madness is possibly my favorite John Carpenter movie after The Thing. I had actually ignored this movie for the longest time because a lot of people told me that 90s John Carpenter was bad. Yes, I can understand that, look at Escape from LA. No, Razorfist, it's not a good movie and you're just deluding yourself that it's something that it's not.
However, my friend Marco suggested that I at least check out In the Mouth of Madness. I was immediately in love. This may be due to everything in In the Mouth of Madness feeling like a nightmare from my childhood. Everything from the cop's distorted face to the old man riding a bicycle. Everything in this movie felt like a nightmare. Sam Neill seems to be having a great time (as he always is in horror films). And hey, look Fright Night 2's Julie Carmen is back. I honestly prefer her in this movie, as her character seems a bit more fleshed out than her role as Jerry Danridge's sister. The effects are pretty good throughout. There are a few that I'm not a fan of, but they're pretty good overall. I do really enjoy the monsters chasing Sam Neill down the hall. I would love to see more of them but also think it was better to just get an implied idea of what they look like. An unspeakable horror, if you will. Let's not forget about Jürgen Prochnow as Sutter Kane. He's great. A nice mix of intimidating and perhaps just shy of the edge of insanity. There is also a great humor to his character. Did I tell you my favorite color is blue?
